ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) matched her career high of 24 points to lead the Holy Cross women's basketball team past Navy 85-80 in conference action Tuesday night. The Crusaders improve to 10-16 overall and 5-6 in the league while Navy drops to 10-15 on the season and 4-7 in the conference.
Holy Cross jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first few minutes of the game as senior center Kaitlin Foley (Albany, N.Y.) scored four of the nine points while freshman guard O'Dell hit one from the long range. The Crusaders followed up 7-5 to maintain an eight point advantage (16-8). Later in the first half O'Dell scored eight points in a 10-6 streak to put the Crusaders up by 10 with 5:05 left in the first half. Holy Cross went into the break with a 13 point lead (43-30).
After the first half O'Dell led the Crusaders with 17 points and four rebounds shooting six of nine from the floor hitting five from the three-point range.
Navy came out of the locker room to outscore Holy Cross 8-5 and come within seven points (48-41). Holy Cross maintained a 10-12 point lead most of the second half until Navy went on a 12-6 run late in the game to come within four with 2:23 left in the second half. The Mids were still only down by four with 26 seconds left, but the Crusaders held on to win by five, 85-80.
Senior guard Brittany Keil (Sparta, N.J.) had 15 points and eight rebounds, Foley had 15 points and four rebounds and freshmen guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) scored 15 points and had a career-high seven assists for Holy Cross.
The Crusaders return home Saturday for their senior game when they take on American at 1:00 p.m. at the Hart Center.
