Women's Basketball Edged By Army, 56-54

WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore guard Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) scored a team-high 17 points while sophomore guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) had 16 points but it wasn't enough as Holy Cross fell to Army, 56-54, in a first place Patriot League showdown. The Crusaders drop to 13-11 on the season and 6-3 in the league while the Black Knights improve to 16-8 and 7-2 in league play.
McFadden hit a shot from outside the arc with 19 seconds left on the clock to tie the game, 54-54, but a layup by Alex McGuire lifted Army to the two-point victory.
With .06 left in the game, the Crusaders made a final attempt as senior guard Laura Aloisi (Nashua, N.H.) grabbed a long pass and tried for a layup, but came up unsuccessful.
Army jumped out to an early first half lead, but Holy Cross put the pressure on, tying the game four times in the first seven minutes. Army grabbed its largest lead (25-15), but the Crusaders brought themselves within five at halftime, 27-22, as Aloisi hit a three-pointer with 1:50 left in the half.
Holy Cross quickly tied the game, 27-27, in the first 26 seconds of the second half with three points scored by O'Dell. The Crusaders three's came alive as McFadden and O'Dell hit two shots from long range a piece to give Holy Cross a 43-41 advantage with 13:15 left in the game.
The Crusaders led the game, 51-46, but Army held them scoreless for almost five minutes, taking a 54-51 advantage with 39 seconds, setting up the final points of the game.
O'Dell finished with four rebounds, three steals and two assists while McFadden had three rebounds, three steals and one block. Aloisi had nine points, five assists, two steals, one rebound and one block for Holy Cross.
Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, February 16 when it hosts Bucknell for a game scheduled at 1:00 p.m.
