Women's Basketball Edges Navy, 56-53

WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman center Elizabeth Campbell (Louisville, Ky.) scored a team-high 13 points as Holy Cross defeated Navy, 56-53, in Patriot League action tonight. The Crusaders improve to 15-11 overall and 8-3 in league play in the Patriot League while the Mids drop to 6-20 overall and 2-9 in the league.

Navy broke away from a 6-6 tie in the opening minutes, going on a 14-4 run as Cassie Consedine scored five points and Whitney Davidson chipped in four points. With 10:41 left in the half, the Mids' led 20-10.

The Crusaders shook up Navy's offense, holding the Mids scoreless for almost eight and a half minutes and grabbing its second lead of the game, 23-20. The Holy Cross 13-0 run was scored six different Holy Cross players, each chipping in a layup.

The Crusaders held onto a 25-23 lead in the final minute of the half but a three-pointer by Emily Cordle with 44 second left in the half lifted Navy to a 26-25 halftime lead.

Battling for the lead in the opening minutes of the second half, Holy Cross took the upper hand, grabbing a six-point cushion (38-32) as sophomore Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) sank a shot from long range.

Tied 49-49 with 2:25 left in the game, junior forward Kathy Gruzynski (Elk Grove, Ill.) hit a layup to put Holy Cross ahead by two points. The Mids' Angela Myers answered back with a shot outside the arc, lifting Navy to a 52-51 lead with 48 seconds winding down on the clock.

Campbell took back the lead and secured the victory, scoring a layup with 26 second left to play, assisted by Gruzynski.

In addition to her 13 points, Campbell tied her career-high in blocks with five while grabbing four and one assist. O'Dell paced the Crusaders with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists while sophomore guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) chipped in 10 points, five rebounds, one assist and one block.

Holy Cross returns to action when it travels to American on Saturday February 23, for a game scheduled at 2:00 p.m.
