BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) had a team-high 16 points but it wasn't enough as the Holy Cross women's basketball team dropped a 71-60 Patriot League contest to Lehigh on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 13-16 overall and 8-6 in the Patriot League while the Mountain Hawks improve to 23-6 on the season and 12-2 in league play.
Holy Cross opened with a 13-5 run with sophomore Whitney Fremeau (Manchester, N.H.) and junior guard Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) scoring six points each. After trailing by 10 points (22-12), Lehigh grabbed the upper hand after a 10-2 run with eight points scored by Emily Gratch. A three-pointer by Alex Ross put the Mountain Hawks by two points (34-32) but a layup by McFadden in the final 30 second of the first half tied the game, 34-34.
The Crusaders opened the second half with a 7-0 run, taking a 41-34 lead. Lehigh retaliated with a 9-2 run to tie the game. The lead bounced between the teams, but the Mountain Hawks broke free with a 12-0 run with eight points scored by Emily Gratch, pushing ahead to a 63-51 lead. The Crusaders got within nine points of Lehigh, 67-56, with less than six minutes remaining but the Mountain Hawks closed out the game with a 14-4 run to win by 11 points, 71-60.
Fremeau finished the game with 11 points, including 10 in the first half while adding three rebounds and one assist. O'Dell finished with 11 points, four rebounds, fours teals and three assists. Sophomore forward Elizabeth Campbell (Louisville, Ky.) also had a strong game for Holy Cross, finishing with 10 points, a team-high in rebounds (seven) and blocks (three) and one assist.
Holy Cross will be the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, where it will face No. 5 seed Army on Saturday, March 7, at 2:30 p.m. The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the Patriot League Tournament will be played at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem Pa.
