MAHWAH, N.J. - Sophomore Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) hit two shots from the free throw line with six seconds left in the game, lifting the Holy Cross women's basketball team to a 46-44 victory over Lehigh in the 2008 Patriot League Tournament semifinals. The second-seeded Crusaders advance to the tournament finals, hosting fifth-seeded Bucknell on Wednesday, March 12, at 6:00 p.m.
Freshman guard Alyssa May (Oradell, N.J.) hit a shot from long range with 1:05 left to play to tie the game, 44-44. A foul on O'Dell set up the winning shots from the charity stripe, securing the Crusaders spot in the championship.
The teams opened with a 7-5 Lehigh lead in the first five minutes of the first half but scoring became stagnant as both teams' defense took over, halting scoring for almost six minutes. Holy Cross got within two of the Mountain Hawks (16-14) but Clair Sullivan put up two quick layups in the final two minutes of the half, giving Lehigh a 20-14 lead at half time.
Holy Cross scored first in the second half but the Mountain Hawks put up six quick points, grabbing a 26-16 lead. The Crusaders chipped away at Lehigh's lead but a layup by Erica Prosser put the Mountain Hawks up by nine (37-28) with 10:29 left in the game.
Lehigh continued to keep a steady lead over Holy Cross, but the Crusaders kept after them offensively. Down 44-36 with 3:40 left in the game, sophomore guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) brought Holy Cross within three, hitting a shot from beyond the arc and netting a jumper.
McFadden finished with 12 points, six rebounds and two assists while freshman center Elizabeth Campbell (Louisville, Ky.) was one rebound shy of a double-double, chipping in 10 points and nine boards. May scored seven points all in the second half while grabbing five rebounds, two steals, and one assist. O'Dell dished out seven points, seven rebounds, seven assist and four steals.
