WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) had 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, but it wasn't enough as the Holy Cross women's basketball team lost to Assumption, 67-54, in an exhibition game at the Hart Center. Junior Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) had 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Crusaders.
Beginning the game with a 7-0 run, Holy Cross grabbed an 11-point lead, 16-5, with McFadden scoring seven points. In the final eight minutes of the first half, Assumption chipped away at the Crusader lead led by Molly Griffiths and Bethany Plasski who scored four points each, bringing the Greyhounds within two points, 28-26, at halftime. Back-and-forth traffic in the opening five minutes was halted by Assumption, who grabbed a 38-37 lead at the 14:15 mark and never looked back for a 67-54 victory.
Sophomore center Elizabeth Campbell (Louisville, Ky.) had 10 points and three rebounds while sophomore forward Whitney Fremeau (Manchester, N.H.) made her first collegiate start, chipping in seven points, three rebounds and one block. Starting in her first collegiate game, freshman guard Meredith Ward (Westerly, R.I.) had five points, six rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Holy Cross opens its regular season on Saturday, Nov. 15, when it hosts Yale at 1:00 p.m. at the Hart Center.
