WEST POINT, N.Y. - Holy Cross sophomore Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) has been named the 2007-2008 Patriot League Player of the Year, as announced by the league at the women's basketball tournament banquet tonight.
Earlier in the week, McFadden was named to the All-Patriot League first team. She leads the league in free throw percentage, ranks second in scoring and sixth in both three-point field goal percentage and in three-point field goals made. McFadden leads the Crusaders with 13.8 points per game and fourth on the team in rebounds, averaging 3.4 boards per game. McFadden is also ranked third on the team in assists (50), steals (24), and blocks (12). She scored a career-high 28 points against Albany (Nov. 23) and tied her career-high in rebounds with seven versus Florida (Dec. 28). She led Holy Cross in scoring 14 of its 29 games including seven of the 14 Patriot League contests this year.
McFadden also set new records in this season, tying the school record for best free throw percentage in a single game, going 11-for-11 from the charity stripe on Dec. 29. She also tied the school record for consecutive free throws in a single game with 11.
McFadden was acknowledged earlier in the year as she was named the Patriot League Player of the Week (Feb. 4) for the first time in her career.
The three other major awards announced were Defensive Player of the Year Margaree King from Army, Rookie of the Year Cassie Consedine from Navy, and Coach of the Year Melissa McFerrin from American.
The second seeded Crusaders will face seventh-seeded Navy in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament on Saturday, March 8 at 5:00 p.m. The game will be played at the Christl Arena on the campus of the U.S. Military Academy.
