WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior guard Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.), a member of the Holy Cross women's basketball team, is the 2008-2009 recipient of the Samantha Vellaccio Award. The award was presented at the 54th annual Holy Cross Varsity Club dinner, held at the Hogan Campus Center on Satruday, May 2.
The Vellaccio Award is presented annually to the varsity women's basketball player who best exemplifies the mission of Holy Cross both on and off the court.
O'Dell was named second team All-Patriot League for the third straight season, after averaging 12.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists and a team-high 1.6 steals per game. She has broken the Holy Cross career records for both three-point field goals made (215) and three-point field goals attempted (545), in addition to becoming the 26th 1,000-point scorer in school history. O'Dell will enter her senior year ranked 19th all-time at Holy Cross with 1,104 career points scored.
Off the court, she played a large role in Holy Cross' involvement with the Mercy Centre, a private day school located in Worcester that services students aged 6-22 with special needs.
