Field Hockey Downed By Dartmouth, 8-1
WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Janine Leger scored three goals as the Dartmouth Big Green defeated the Holy Cross field hockey team by a score of 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field. The Crusaders are now 1-8 on the season while the Big Green move to 4-4.
Dartmouth got on the board just 9:23 into the first half when senior Liz Blanken was awarded a penalty shot and buried the ball in the top left corner of the cage. Just under a minute later, Leger scored her first goal off an assist by sophomore Ali Savage. Junior Maggie Scanlon added a third goal with 21:30 remaining in the half and the Big Green took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The second half opened with Dartmouth scoring two quick goals, both by Leger. The first came just 53 seconds into the half off an assist by sophomore Rebecca Hu. The second came 57 seconds later with the assist credited to Blanken. Senior Lisa Masini would add to the Dartmouth lead with two straight goals coming with 23:35 and 21:28 remaining in the game. Scanlon added the eighth and final goal for the Big Green with 19:59, receiving a pass from junior Sam Anderson on a two-on-one breakaway.
Holy Cross scored its lone goal off a penalty corner with 9:12 remaining. Sophomore Molly Feit (Acton, Mass.) sent a pass to junior Lindsay MacPhail (Goffstown, N.H.) who set up junior Kelly Burke (Walpole, Mass.) with a shot from 15 yards out.
Crusader goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) made six saves and is now 1-8 on the season. Dartmouth's Ellen Meyer made six saves and moves to 1-1. The Big Green outshot the Crusaders 24-9 in the game.
The Crusaders will return to action and open Patriot League play on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Lehigh at 11:00 a.m.
