Field Hockey Falls To American, 2-0
WASHINGTON, D.C. – American forward Shelly Montgomery scored two goals to help propel the Eagles to a 2-0 triumph over Holy Cross in Patriot League field hockey action this afternoon at the Jacobs Recreational Complex. The Crusaders fall to 2-11 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while American improves to 6-8 and 2-1 in the league.
The Eagles began the game's scoring at the 19:11 mark as Montgomery received a cross from Julie Fosseprez and launched a shot from the right side to give American the 1-0 lead. Holy Cross had an opportunity to score in the 24th minute as junior midfielder Jillian Caffrey (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) fired a shot on a penalty corner that was saved by American goaltender Ashley Dalisera.
Montgomery scored her second goal of the contest five minutes into the second half. Her initial shot rang the crossbar, but she gathered the rebound and put it in the back of the net for her team-leading ninth goal of the year.
The Eagles unleashed a barrage of shots against Holy Cross sophomore Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.), but the second-year player stood tall making 12 saves in the defeat. Dalisera made one save in the winning effort.
American held a 22-2 advantage in shots including a 12-1 clip in the second half. The Eagles also had a 6-1 edge in penalty corners. Caffrey registered the only two shots for the Crusaders, while Montgomery led the Eagles with five attempts at the net.
Holy Cross will return to action on Saturday, October 20 when it will host Lafayette at 12 p.m. at the Hart Turf Field.
