ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell junior forward Hannah Balleza tallied three points with a goal and an assist as the Big Red defeated the Holy Cross field hockey team by a score of 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. The Crusaders finish the 2012 season with a 2-15 mark overall and 1-4 in the Patriot League, while Cornell improves its overall record to 7-9.

The Big Red scored the first goal of the contest at 13:43, as Brittany Thompson gathered a rebound off the initial save by Holy Cross sophomore goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) and put it into the net for the 1-0 lead.

After the intermission, Cornell netted its second goal of the game in the 40th minute as Marisa Siergiej scored off a penalty corner with assists coming from Balleza and Taylor Standiford.

Cornell would score their final two goals within three minutes of each other. Ann Dipastina increased the lead to 3-0 with a shot from the baseline, while Balleza potted the clincher on a shot from the right side that hit the left post.

Holy Cross had a chance to score late in the contest as junior forward Carly Grimaudo (Hopewell Junction N.Y.) launched a shot at the cage, but Cornell keeper Carolyn Horner pushed away the scoring opportunity.

Matchett made 14 saves for the Crusaders in the losing effort, while senior goalie Kelly Sotsky (Wayne N.J.) also appeared in the game. Horner was called upon to make one save for the Big Red.

Cornell held advantages in shots (20-3), shots on goal (18-1), and penalty corners (3-1).

Holy Cross has now completed the 2012 season. All-Patriot League accolades and honors will be awarded next week.
