Holy Cross Womens Ice Hockey Skates Past Castleton State, 5-0
RUTLAND, Vt. - Junior Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Saskatchewan) registered her first hat trick of the season to guide the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team past Castleton State, 5-0, at Spartan Arena on Saturday afternoon in ECAC action. With the win, Holy Cross improves to 8-0-1 (6-0-1 ECAC), while the Spartans fall to 2-7-1 (2-5-1 ECAC).
Holy Cross took the lead at the 7:16 mark in the first period on
Kratchmer's fourth goal of the season and never looked back. After
receiving a pass from freshman Caroline English
(Dorchester, Mass.) in the slot, Kratchmer went
forehand-to-backhand slipping the puck under Castleton goalie
Katharyn Dembowski for a 1-0 lead. At the 16:26 mark, Kratchmer
extended the Crusaders lead to 2-0 on the power play. Kratchmer one
timed a crisp pass from English inside the left post past Dembowski
for her second goal of the contest.
Sophomore Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) took
advantage of the power play at the 10:09 mark in the second period,
pushing Holy Cross out in front, 3-0. Several minutes later
Hochkins chased down a loose puck near the right boards and made a
pass to Kratchmer for her third goal of the game, giving Holy
Cross the 4-0 advantage.
Sophomore Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) made
it 5-0 in the third period at 7:31, redirecting a shot into the net
on the power-play.
Junior goalie Monique Gallant (Antigonish, Nova
Scotia) stopped eight shots, earning her third shutout of
the season. Dembowski combined with Amanda Hoy to allow five goals
on 42 shots. Holy Cross went 3-9 on the man advantage, while
Castleton went 0-4.
Holy Cross will return home to the Hart Center for its final game of 2009 on Tuesday, Dec. 8, hosting Plymouth State at 7:00 p.m.
