RUTLAND, Vt. – Sophomore Francesca Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored the first game-winning goal of her career and added two assists as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team recorded a 3-0 victory over Castleton State on Friday night. With the win, Holy Cross is now 13-5-5 on the season and 7-4-5 in the ECAC East. The Spartans are now 9-10-5 (6-6-5 ECAC East).
Panarelli put the Crusaders on the board with 15 seconds left in the first period, beating Castleton State goaltender Paula Stephens after corralling a rebound. Seniors Alex Campione (Townsend, Mass.) and Rebecca O'Quinn (Arlington, Mass.) recorded assists on the play to give Holy Cross the 1-0 lead after one period of play.
O'Quinn doubled the Crusader lead just 4:23 into the second period, tipping in a shot by senior Caroline English (Dorchester, Mass.) into the back of the net. It was O'Quinn's eighth goal of the season as Panarelli also recorded her first assist of the night. With 2:31 remaining in the second stanza, junior Kylee Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) tallied her first goal of the season to increase the Crusader lead to 3-0. Panarelli and sophomore Jessica Frascotti (Needham, Mass.) added the helpers on the final score of the game.
Holy Cross sophomore goaltender Alexandra Stevenson (Norwood, N.Y.) made 25 saves for her third shutout of the season and is now 5-2-4 on the season. Stephens made 29 saves and is now 8-8-5. The Crusaders outshot the Spartans 32-25 in the game.
The Crusaders will return to the ice tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 16, at New England College at 1:00 p.m.
