HENNIKER, N.H. – Sophomore Rebecca Fleming (Newton, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winning goal with 2:58 remaining in the second period as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team posted a 2-1 victory over New England College on Saturday afternoon at Lee Clement Arena. The Crusaders improve to 14-5-5 on the season and 8-4-5 in the ECAC East while the Pilgrims move to 8-11-6 (5-9-4 ECAC East).
Holy Cross got out to a 1-0 lead 13:49 into the first period as sophomore Chelsea Monahan (Cherry Hill, N.J.) beat New England goaltender Kristen Conners. Fellow classmante Nicole Giannino (Bay Shore, N.Y.) added an assist on Monahan's fifth goal of the season as the Crusader took the 1-0 advantage into the first intermission.
Fleming then netted her team-high ninth goal of the season and second game-winning goal of the season in unassisted fashion. It was the only goal in the second period for either team. New England finally answered with just 3:34 left in the final stanza as Morgan Braniff beat Holy Cross sophomore goaltender Krista Manzanares (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), her only blemish of the game. The Pilgrims were unable to knot the score despite finishing the game with an extra skater for 1:15 and the Crusaders escaped with a 2-1 triumph.
Manzanares made 29 stops, including 12 in the third period, to earn her ninth win of the season. She stands at 9-3-1. Conners made 34 saves, as the Crusaders tallied double-digit shots in all three periods, and is now 1-3-1 on the year. Holy Cross outshot New England 36-30 in the game.
The Crusaders will return to the ice for their final regular season on game Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Nichols at 8:10 p.m.
