BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Junior forward Rachel Miller (Jackson, Mich.) tallied two goals and one assist, to lead the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team to a 7-1 victory over Sacred Heart at the Wonderland of Ice. With the win, the Crusaders open the 2013-2014 campaign at 1-0, while posting a victory in their season opener for the sixth year in a row. The Pioneers fall to 2-3 on the season.
Holy Cross took at 1-0 lead at the 16:34-mark of the first period, when Miller scored off an assist from junior forward Nicole Giannino (Bay Shore,N.Y.). The Crusaders then put the game away in the second period by scoring five more goals. Freshman forward Rose Rather (Stamford, Conn.) found the net twice, while sophomore forward Kati Goguen (Acton, Mass.), junior forward Chelsea Monahan (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and senior forward Kylee Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) added one goal each. Miller's second goal of the night came early in the third period to make the score 7-0. Sacred Heart was able to avoid the shutout when Amie Varano scored a goal with 13:10 left to play in the game.
Junior goaltender Alexandra Stevenson (Norwood, N.Y.) earned the victory for the Crusaders, making 15 saves while allowing only one goal. Alexius Schutt took the loss for Sacred Heart, making 20 saves while giving up six goals.
Holy Cross returns to action tomorrow, Nov. 9, when it plays host to Salve Regina in a 2:00 p.m. game at the Hart Center.
