Holy Cross Womens Soccer Blanks Wagner, 6-0
WORCESTER, Mass. -
Sophomore Katherine Donnelly (Londonderry, N.H.)
finished with a goal and two assists and five different Crusaders
scored as the Holy Cross women's soccer team shutout Wagner 6-0
tonight at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the win,
the Crusaders improve to 4-2-1 and match their win total from all
of last year while the Seahawks drop to 1-4.
Senior Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) opened the
scoring in the 15th minute with her first tally of the night. She
sent a shot towards the net which was deflected behind Wagner
goaltender Sam Schueschner by a Seahawk defender. Senior
Chelsi Pugliese (Pembroke, Mass.) followed with
her first goal of the season just 37 seconds later. Harrison added
her second goal of the year later in the first half as the
Crusaders opened up a 3-0 halftime lead.
Holy Cross continued its offensive push when Donnelly scored in the
63rd minute off a centering pass from sophomore Kelsey
Dillon (Barrington, R.I.). Stand scored her second of the
game in the 72nd minute when she rocketed a shot off the post and
into the net from 25 yards out. Freshman Maura Fox
(Shrewsbury, Mass.) wrapped up the scoring for the
Crusaders at the 83:20 mark with her first career goal on a
give-and-go feed from sophomore Liz Early (Rockville
Centre, N.Y.).
Crusader netminder senior Jessica Stone (Rockville,
Md.) earned her second shutout of the season and fifth of
her career. She made three saves in the game. Schueschner made six
saves for the Seahawks. Holy Cross outshot Wagner 18-8.
Holy Cross returns to the pitch Friday, Sept. 18 when it hosts
Fairfield at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The game is
set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
