Women's Soccer Scores Late Goal To Defeat Army, 1-0
Worcester, Mass. – Sophomore forward Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) scored the only goal of the contest to propel the Holy Cross women's soccer team past Army by a score of 1-0 in the opening game of Patriot League play Saturday afternoon at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Crusaders are now 5-5-1 (1-0-0 Patriot League) on the season, while the Black Knight slip to 5-7-0 (0-1-0 PL).
Army outshot Holy Cross by a total of 8-1 in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net. The Crusaders were finally able to break the stalemate in the 59th minute as Righini launched a shot from just outside the box past the Black Knight goalkeeper to put Holy Cross on top 1-0. The marker was her third goal of the season and was on the Crusaders' first shot on net.
The Black Knights kept up the pressure and would fire off eight shots in the second stanza, but to no avail as the Crusaders defense stonewalled Army. Sophomore net-minder Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) played sensational in goal for Holy Cross as she made 12 saves in her second consecutive shutout and fourth of the campaign.
Army held advantages in shots (16-5), shots on goal (12-2), and corner kicks (5-0).
This is the first time Holy Cross has defeated Army since a 2-0 victory on October 28, 1995.
The Crusaders will continue Patriot League action as they travel to Bucknell on Friday, October 5, for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
