Women’s Soccer Falls To American, 1-0
WORCESTER, Mass – Lindsay Muri scored the game-winner for the Eagles as the Holy Cross women's soccer team fell to American, 1-0, in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-6-3 (1-1-0 PL), while the Eagles improve to 4-7-0 (1-1-0 PL).
The Crusaders took the first shot on goal of the game in the fourth minute when senior captain Alyssa Heiser (Bristol, Conn.) blasted a shot from 20 yards out but American goalie Charlene Belanger was able to make the save. The Eagles scored the only goal of the contest at 15:44 when Erin Mulhern left the ball for Muri who then sent a shot to the right side of the net from 15 yards out for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Belanger kept the Crusaders off the scoreboard when she made a save on a free kick from 30 yards out by freshman Claire Malone (Glen Ridge, N.J.) in the 37th minute.
At the start of the second half, the Crusaders just missed tying the game when senior captain Sarah Kelley (Bedford, N.H.) sent a long shot that hit the cross bar. Junior goalie Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) kept the score at 1-0 in the 54th minute when she made a save on a free kick from 22 yards out by Michaela Cowgill. The Crusaders created a scoring opportunity in the 75th minute when a charging Belanger made a save on a breakaway by junior Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) and then Belanger made another save on a follow up shot by freshman Courtney Cohen (Lake Grove, N.Y.). Then in the 78th minute, Heiser sent a pass to Righini as her shot from eight yards out was blocked. The Crusaders earned a corner kick in the 87th minute but were unable to post the equalizer.
McCabe made three saves, while Belanger tallied five saves to earn the win. Holy Cross outshot American, 19-7, while the Crusaders took five shots on goal and the Eagles had four. The Crusaders took four corner kicks.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 2, when they play at Patriot League opponent Boston University at 7:00 p.m.
