LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's soccer player Chelsey Garkowski scored a goal in the 86th minute to help lead the Bison to a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon at Emmitt Field. With the win, Bucknell improves to 7-8-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference, while the Crusaders slip to 2-11-4 on the season and 2-6-0 in the Patriot League.
Holy Cross had a chance to score in the 25th minute of the game, as sophomore forward Annie Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) had a shot on net, but it was stopped by Bucknell goalkeeper Jessica Ratner. The Bison tallied their first goal of the contest in the 26th minute off an own goal by Holy Cross. Bucknell's Cassie Denger sent a cross into the box that went off a Crusader defender and into the back of the net to give the Bison the 1-0 lead. The Crusaders tried to get back into the game, with a back-to-back shots by freshman forward Christina Napolitano (Concord, Mass.) and junior midfielder Gina Righini (Salem, N.H.) during the 31st minute, but Ratner made both saves.
Both teams played evenly during the second half, as the shots on net total was 2-2 for the first 40 minutes of the stanza. In the 85th minute, Bucknell's Sarah Bresette launched a ball on net that was guided away by Holy Cross junior goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.). On the ensuing corner kick by the Bison, Garkowski gathered the cross from Courtney Nelson and booted a shot into the back of the net to give Bucknell the 2-0 lead. The Crusaders had one final scoring chance in the 89th minute, as senior midfielder Sarah Kelley (Bedford, N.H.) drove a shot on goal, but Ratner made the save to preserve the 2-0 victory.
Ratner made seven saves on the afternoon to earn the shutout, while McCabe made eight stops for the Crusaders. The Bison held advantages in shots (18-12), shots on goal (10-7) and corner kicks (6-0).
Holy Cross will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2, when it will play its final regular season contest at Lehigh at 3:00 p.m.
