BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh's Danielle Salans tallied the game-winning goal in the 47th minute to help lead the Mountain Hawks to a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With the win, Lehigh improves to 5-10-2 overall and 3-6-0 in the Patriot League, while the Crusaders conclude the 2013 season with a 2-12-4 record and a 2-7-0 mark in the conference.
The Mountain Hawks began the game strong offensively, with four shots (two on goal) over the first 15:09, but could not get any past Holy Cross junior goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.). The Crusaders had their first shot on goal in the 28th minute, as sophomore forward Annie Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) had the scoring chance, but Lehigh netminder Ali Griffin made the stop.
Holy Cross senior Gaby Ransom (Concord, N.H.) also had a shot on net in the 37th minute, but again Griffin made the save. Lehigh would have one final shot on goal in the half, as both teams went into the locker rooms at a 0-0 stalemate.
In the second half, the Mountain Hawks jumped right out and tallied the game's only marker. Off a corner kick in the 47th minute, Salans received a pass from Jordan Goodwin and beat McCabe on a shot inside the left post to give Lehigh the 1-0 lead.
Ransom launched a shot on goal for Holy Cross in the 77th minute, but it was stopped by Griffin. The Crusaders almost tied the contest in the 90th minute of action, as senior midfielder Cassie Muzik (Massapequa, N.Y.) drove a shot on goal, but it was gathered by Griffin to preserve the victory for Lehigh.
McCabe made eight saves on the afternoon for Holy Cross, while Griffin made four stops in the winning effort for the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh held the advantages in shots (22-9) and shots on goal (9-4), while both teams had three corner kicks each.
