WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross head softball coach Brian Claypool has announced that senior Sam Fregenti (Melville, N.Y.) and junior Alex Gustafson (Medford, Mass.) have been named co-captains for the 2013 season. Both Fregenti and Gustafson were named to the All-Patriot League second team last season.
Fregenti was a tri-captain last season and started all 45 games for the Crusaders. She led the team with a .307 batting average, four home runs, 18 runs batted in, 39 hits, 57 total bases, a .449 slugging percentage and a .360 on-base percentage. Fregenti broke the Holy Cross career home run record just six games into the season and will enter the 2013 campaign with 19 career long balls.
Gustafson started all but one game in 2012 and led the team with 11 multiple-hit games. She finished second behind Fregenti in batting average (.294), hits (37), runs batted in (12) and total bases (47) and was tied for second on the team in home runs with two. Gustafson was also named to the Patriot League All-Academic team.
The Crusaders will return 14 letterwinners from last year's squad and add eight freshmen to the 2013 team.
