LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) went three-for-three with three runs batted in and two runs scored in game two as the Holy Cross softball team fell to Siena in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon by scores of 10-2 and 15-7. The Crusaders are now 11-17 on the season while the Saints move to 8-19.
After a scoreless first inning, the Crusaders got on the board in the top of the second inning as junior Kelliner Croushore (Claremont, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a single by sophomore Emma Keough (Rochester, Mass.). Junior Sarah Free (Claremont, Calif.) then drove a two-out single up the middle to score Croushore. The lead did not last long however as the Saints tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the inning as Paige Lloyd doubled to drive in Lauren Milligan.
Siena then put up three runs in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth and five in the fifth to end the game. Of the 10 runs, only four were earned as the Crusaders committed five errors in the contest. The only other run for Holy Cross came in the top of the fifth inning as senior Sam Fregenti (Melville, N.Y.) launched her third home run of the season.
Freshman pitcher Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) suffered the loss to move to 6-8 on the season. Durham went three and one-third innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out one. Senior Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) came on in relief and pitched one and one-third innings, allowing one earned run. Jordan Sandrini received the win for Siena, moving to 4-5 on the season, going five complete innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five.
The Crusaders took an early lead in game two as Jarvis led off the game with a single, freshman Colleen Ahern (Northbrook, Ill.) drew a two-out walk and Croushore registered a two-RBI single. Siena tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the frame as Mandy Ferro and Melanie Kalesse singled and scored on a sacrifice fly and single, respectively.
Holy Cross regained the lead in the top of the second as freshman Becky Geddes (Cumberland, R.I.) singled and scored on a double by Jarvis. The Saints responded once again in the bottom of the second, plating two runs to take a 4-3 lead. After a scoreless third, Geddes singled in the top of the fourth and Jarvis blasted a two-run home run to put the Crusaders back on top, 5-4. It was Jarvis' fourth career home run.
The Saints broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, plating five runs on four hits including two doubles. With the score 9-5, Siena, Fregenti and Ahern both scored in the top of the fifth to keep the Crusaders in the game, 9-7. It was not enough, however, as Siena scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game, 15-7.
Junior starting pitcher Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) went three innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out two. Freshman Mary Stuckey (Dumont, N.J.) suffered the loss after working one and one-third innings to move to 0-1 on the season. Legros also came on for one-third of an inning of work in the bottom of the fifth. Antonia Edwards (2-6) got the win for Siena, going four and two-thirds innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits while striking out two.
The Crusaders will return to Freshman Field this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14, for a pair of doubleheaders against Colgate beginning at 12:00 p.m. both days.
