Softball Swept By Lehigh
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore Emma Keough (Rochester, Mass.) registered two doubles on the afternoon as the Holy Cross softball team was swept by Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at Kaufman Field by scores of 5-0 and 4-2. The Crusaders are now 13-23 (7-7 Patriot League) on the season while the Mountain Hawks improve to 27-14 (11-3 Patriot League).
The first five innings went scoreless as freshman pitcher Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) allowed just four hits over the timeframe and escaped the bottom of the fourth inning with a Lehigh runner stranded on third. Holy Cross' first hit came in the top of the third inning as Keough doubled to right center but could not score.
The Mountain Hawks took advantage of two costly Crusader errors in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating all five runs in the stanza. Lizzy Orden and Jessica Long both scored on an error to break the scoreless tie and pinch hitter Emily Bausher drove in two more with two outs in the inning. Bausher came around ot score on a double by Kristen Mitchell, bringing the final tally to 5-0, Lehigh.
Durham went six complete innings and allowed five runs, all unearned, on seven hits while tying her season-high mark of five strike outs to move to 7-10 on the season. Rebecca Bliss (15-6) recorded the win going seven complete innings and allowing just two hits while striking out seven.
After two scoreless innings in which every batter went down in order, the Crusaders took the lead in the top of the third as Keough doubled to right center and scored on a single by junior Sarah Free (Claremont, Calif.). The lead did not last long, however, as the Mountain Hawks responded in the bottom half of the frame with a run of their own as Bausher doubled down the left field line and scored on a ground out by MacKenzie Velasquez, making the score 1-1 after three complete innings.
Holy Cross regained a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fifth when junior Kelliner Croushore (Claremont, Calif.) doubled to center field and scored on a single by sophomore Abigail Lang (Londonderry, N.H.). Lehigh came to bat in the bottom of the fifth and Liz Lucas launched a three-run home run over the center field fence to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-2 advantage after five complete innings.
The Crusaders could not advance a runner past first base in the sixth and seventh innings as Lehigh came away with a 4-2 victory. Junior Holy Cross pitcher Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) went six complete innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out three to move to 6-8 on the season. Bausher (11-6) went seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out seven.
The Crusaders will try to earn to rebound tomorrow, April 21, at Lehigh for a twin bill at 12:00 p.m.
