Softball Falls In Twin Bill Versus Marist
WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Emma Keough (Rochester, Mass.) hit her second home run of the season in game two but the the Holy Cross softball team fell in its final non-conference games of the season at home to Marist by scores of 8-0 and 8-4. The Crusaders are now 13-27 on the season while the Red Foxes move to .500 at 21-21.
The Red Foxes took an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first as Danielle Koltz send a one-out single to left and scored on a single by Nicole Cheek. Alyssa Zahka then hit a double to left center field to bring home Cheek. The Crusaders tallied a hit in each of the first four innings but could not get on the board.
In the top of the fifth inning, Marist sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs to put the game out of reach. Taylor Kuzma led off with a single and scored on a double by Maureen Duddy. An error brought home Duddy and after two put outs by Holy Cross, three singles and another error brought in the final four runs. Marist pitcher Janine Lalli sent down the Crusader in order in the bottom of the fifth as the Red Foxes came away with an 8-0 victory.
Lalli went five innings and allowed just four hits while striking out two. Freshman Holy Cross pitcher Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) threw five innings and allowed three earned runs on nine hits while striking out five to move to 7-12 on the year.
Marist continued to be productive offensively as the visitors put up three runs in the top of the first inning. Duddy walked and scored on a single by Zahka, Cheek singled and scored on a passed ball and Zahka scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyrsten Van Natta.
Holy Cross responded in the bottom of the second as junior Kelliner Croushore (Claremont, Calif.) singled to lead off the inning and, after a stolen base and wild pitch, scored on a ground out by fellow classmate Sarah Free (Claremont, Calif.). Freshman Becky Geddes (Cumberland, R.I.) then sent a two-out double to left center field and scored on a single by freshman Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) to cut the lead to 3-2, Red Foxes.
Marist increased its advantage in the top of the fifth, plating three more runs to make the score 6-2. One inning later, Cheek sent a two-run home run over the right center field fence to bring the advantage to 8-2. Holy Cross' Keough led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run that cleared the fence in left field, making the score 8-3. The Crusaders plated one more run on a RBI single by Croushore in the bottom of the seventh, but Lalli escaped a bases loaded jam to end the game with Marist winning it, 8-4.
Lalli went seven innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on 10 hits while striking out seven and is now 6-3 on the season. Sophomore starting pitcher Tori Cheske (Thomaston, Conn.) took the loss to move to 0-1 on the year, going one inning and allowing three runs. Junior Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) came on in relief, going five innings and allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out five. Senior Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) also saw one inning of action in the top of the seventh.
Holy Cross will play its final regular season series on Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28, at Freshman Field against visiting Bucknell. The doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. both days.
