POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Holy Cross softball team split a pair of games at Marist this afternoon as the Red Foxes came away with game one, 5-2, while the Crusaders rebounded to take game two, 5-4. Senior Kelliner Croushore (Claremont, Calif.) led the squad in game one going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, her second long ball of the year. In the nightcap, sophomore Becky Geddes (Cumberland, R.I.) posted a home run in the top of the second and senior Alex Gustafson (Medford, Mass.) drove in the eventual game-winning run in the top of the sixth to lift Holy Cross. The Crusaders move to 10-20 on the season while Marist now stands at 17-21 on the year.
The game was scorelesss through three innings at Gartland Field before Marist struck first in the bottom of the fourth. The Red Foxes took a 4-0 lead on a RBI single by Aly Klemmer and three-run home run by Rebecca Freeman.
The Crusaders responded in the top of the fifth as sophomore Hailey Mullen (Plainville, Mass.) reached base on a bunt single before Croushore blasted a one-out homer to right field to cut the lead in half, 4-2.
The Red Foxes added one insurance run in their half of the fifth to take a 5-2 edge off two hits. Marist pitcher Melanie White downed the Crusaders in order in the sixth and seventh innings to come away with game one. The Red Foxes out hit Holy Cross 6-4 and neither team posted an error in the game.
Sophomore Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) took the loss (4-11) as she went six innings giving up six hits, five runs and striking out five of the 25 batters she faced. White earned the victory (3-6) as she threw a complete game giving up four hits, two runs and posting five strike outs.
Holy Cross jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Geddes hit her second home run of the season to left field off of starting pitcher Jayne Oberdorf. Marist answered in the bottom of the third as Taylor Kuzma posted an RBI sacrifice fly to knot the score up at one.
The Crusaders regained the lead in the top of the fourth as senior Sarah Free (Claremont, Calif.) singled down the left field line to score junior Abigail Lang (Londonderry, N.H.), who was walked earlier in the inning. Sophomore Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) then knocked in Free with a double of her own to left center field to make it a 3-1 ball game.
Holy Cross added its fourth run in the fifth inning as Geddes posted her second RBI of the game after reaching on an error. Marist cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth as Kuzma posted her second RBI of the game with a double.
In the sixth, the Crusaders added an important insurance run as Gustafson drove in Free on a single up the middle to make the score 5-2 at the time. The Red Foxes put up two runs in their half of the inning off a sacrifice fly from Haley Birnbaum and a double by Janna Korak to make the score 5-4. Marist had one runner on with one out in the bottom of the seventh but she was thrown out attempting to steal second base. Senior pitcher Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) then struck out the final batter of the game to give the Crusaders the victory.
Barrett earned the win in the circle (6-5) as she threw a complete game giving up 10 hits, four runs, and striking out three Marist players. Jayne Oberdorf took the loss (0-5) for Marist, pitching four innings and giving up three runs while Janine Lalli came on in relief, throwing three innings and giving up three hits and two runs.
Holy Cross will return to Patriot League play this weekend for a three-game series against Army with playoff implications on the line. The first pitch of the doubleheader on Saturday is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
