Women's Indoor Track And Field Takes Seventh At Joe Donahue Invitational
Boston, Mass. – Junior Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) took first place in the 200-meter dash as the Holy Cross women's indoor track and field team finished seventh on Friday afternoon at the Joe Donahue Invitational hosted by Northeastern. Seniors Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Kathleen Brekka (Hubbardston, Mass.) added a second and third place finish, respectively, to lead the Crusaders who finished with 47 points. Northeastern, UMass and Boston College finished tied for first in the team competition with 85.50 points each.
Okpoebo finished the 200-meter dash with a time 25.55 and crossed the finish line second in the 60-meter dash in a team season-best 7.71 seconds. Gorski ran the 800-meter in a career-best time of 2:12.64 while Brekka posted a time of 2:58.91 in the 1,000-meter run, each setting team season-best marks.
Other top finishers for the Crusaders included sophomore Marissa Romano (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) who finished fifth and set a career and team-best mark of 10.92 meters in the triple jump and junior Kylene Carey (East Bridgewater, Mass.) who took 10th and set a new team mark of 9.60 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Junior Mariel Flood (Kinnelon, N.J.) improved her career-best distance in the long jump to 5.11 meters with a sixth place finish while sophomore Brianna Tabin (South Hadley, Mass.) took sixth behind Okpoebo in the 200 with a time of 26.53 seconds. Freshman Oona Wood (Williamstown, Mass.) finished behind Gorksi in eighth place in the 800-meter with a time of 2:20.60 as fellow freshman Elizabeth Provost (Adams, Mass.) also took eighth in the shot put with a distance of 11.83 meters.
Rounding out the top-10 finishers for the Crusaders were Romano who finished behind flood in eighth place in the long jump (5.06 meters) and senior Melanie Forte (Milford, N.H.) who took ninth in the 60-meter preliminary dash (8.10), just missing the final heat. Freshman Melissa LaCoste (Amherst, N.H.) landed tied for ninth in the high jump (1.50 meters) and senior Kelcey Germain (Auburn, Mass.) took 10th in the weight throw (14.35 meters). The 4x400-meter relay team comprised of sophomore Payton Shubrick (Springfield, Mass.), Wood, sophomore Fiorella Johnson (Redding, Conn.) and sophomore Sarah Dahlstrom (Southborough, Mass.) finished in seventh place with a time of 4:04.76.
The women's indoor track and field team will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Maine at 11:30 a.m.
