ORONO, Maine – The women's indoor track and field team traveled to Maine on Saturday and came away with a 100.50-79.50 victory over the Black Bears. The Crusaders finished in first place in 11 events as senior Kelcey Germain (Auburn, Mass.), junior Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.) and freshmen Melissa LaCoste (Amherst, N.H.) and Oona Wood (Williamstown, Mass.) set new team season-best marks in their respective events.
Germain set a new career-high with a distance of 14.94 meters and a second place finish in the weight throw. Hughes crossed the finish line in first place in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:20.85 while LaCoste cleared a height of 1.60 meters in the high jump to take the top spot. Wood led the field in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:17.69. The Crusaders took the top five spots in the 500 as senior Sarah Meinelt (Topsfield, Mass.) took second (1:20.47), freshman Rachelle Sylvia (Westerly, R.I.) finished third (1:23.42), sophomore Fiorella Johnson (Redding, Conn.) was fourth (1:23.74) and junior Lauren Bellerose (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took fifth (1:24.52).
Junior Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded two first place finishes in the 55-meter (7.30) and 200-meter (25.63) dashes. Senior Kathleen Brekka (Hubbardston, Mass.) finished first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.90 while fellow classmate Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) crossed the finish line in first place in the 1,000-meter run at 2:59.27. The 4x440-yard relay team comprised of Okpoebo, Johnson, Gorski and Wood also took the top spot with a time of 4:03.88.
In the field events, junior Kylene Carey (East Bridgewater, Mass.), sophomore Marissa Romano (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) and sophomore Sarah Dahlstrom (Southborough, Mass.) finished one, two, three in the long jump with distances of 5.04, 4.96 and 4.89 meters, respectively. Romano also finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 10.79 meters and freshman Alex Eckert (Bergenfield, N.J.) took second at 10.62 meters. Freshman Elizabeth Provost (Adams, Mass.) finished first in the weight throw with a distance of 11.77 meters, followed by Dahlstrom (10.81) and junior Christy Manning (Scarborough, Maine) (10.24).
The women's indoor track and field team will return to action on Friday, Feb. 8, at the Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University at 1:30 p.m.
