AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished first of 61 runners in the 100-meter dash as the Holy Cross women's track and field team traveled to the Minuteman Invitational hosted by UMass Amherst on Saturday. The Crusaders finished fifth of 19 teams at the meet with 58.50 points. Connecticut placed first with 108 points. Okpoebo crossed the finish line in the 100 with a time of 12.46 seconds.
Okpoebo also brought home a second place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.26 seconds. The 4x100-meter relay team comprised of Okpoebo, sophomore Katie Bobinski (Torrington, Conn.), senior Melanie Forte (Milford, N.H.) and sophomore Brianna Tabin (South Hadley, Mass.) also notched a second place finish with a time of 48.50.
Other top performers for the Crusaders included senior Kelcey Germain (Auburn, Mass.) who finished fourth and set a career and team season-best mark in the hammer throw (46.87 meters). Junior Christy Manning (Scarborough, Maine) took fifth in the javelin with a team season best throw of 35.39 meters and also took sixth behind Germain in the hammer throw with a career-best distance of 42.74 meters.
Tabin finished behind Okpoebo in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, taking fifth (12.61) and eighth place (25.91), respectively. Both times were personal season-bests. Senior Kathleen Brekka (Hubbardston, Mass.) finished sixth in the 800-meter run with a career-best time of 2:15.71, shattering her previous best time by just under two seconds. Freshman Oona Wood (Williamstown, Mass.) finished just Brekka in eighth place with a time of 2:16.18. The 4x400-meter relay team comprised of Wood, sophomore Payton Shubrick (Springfield, Mass.), senior Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Fiorella Johnson (Redding, Conn.) crossed the finish line in fifth place with a time of 4:00.41.
Sophomore Michelle McGahan (Acton, Mass.) took fourth in the pole vault, surpassing a career-best height of 3.40 meters. Fellow classmate MaryGrace Brogioli (Wareham, Mass.) finished seventh in the long jump with a season-best distance of 5.21 meters and sophomore Alexandra Parise (Pine Bush, N.Y.) recorded an eighth place finish in the high jump with a career-best height of 1.51 meters.
Gorski and junior Mariel Flood (Kinnelon, N.J.) each added top-10 finishes. Gorski took ninth in the 400-meter dash with a career and team season-best time of 59.57 seconds and Flood also crossed the finish line in ninth place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.76.
The women's track and field team will host the Holy Cross Heptathlon on Wednesday and Thursday, April 17-18, before returning to full team competition with a home meet on Saturday, April 20, against Bryant, Central Connecticut, Hartford, Maine, Massachusetts and Stonehill beginning at 11:00 a.m.
