WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross finished in first place in nine events as the women's track and field team took first of seven teams at the Holy Cross Invitational on Saturday. The Crusaders totaled 209 team points, surpassing second place Massachusetts (168.50) and third place Maine (159).
Junior Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.00 seconds and sophomore Brianna Tabin (South Hadley, Mass.) took second in the event with a career-best mark of 12.31 seconds. Okpoebo also took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.91.
Senior Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) crossed the finish line ahead of the pack in the 800-meter run with a time 2:13.74. Juniors Amanda Waldron (Walpole, Mass.) and Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) took first and second place respectively in the 5,000-meter run as both set career-best times of 17:38.18 and 17:42.53. Sophomore Abigail Mitchell (Manchester, N.H.) also finished first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, surpassing her previous career- best time by just under 40 seconds and finishing at 11:33.52.
Sophomore Mackenzie Arndt (Merrimack, Mass.) finished first in the pole vault with a height of 3.73 meters and freshman Elizabeth Provost (Adams, Mass.) rounded out the Crusader individual first place finishers in the discus throw with a season-best distance of 38.41 meters. Junior Christy Manning (Scarborough, Maine) finished second behind Provost with a distance of 38.17 meters.
A pair of relay teams claimed first place as the 4x100-meter relay team comprised of Tabin, senior Melanie Forte (Milford, N.H.), sophomore Katie Bobinski (Torrington, Conn.) and Okpoebo took finished at 47.20 and the 4x400-meter relay of freshman Oona Wood (Williamstown, Mass.), Gorski, Okpoebo and sophomore Payton Shubrick (Springfield, Mass.) finished at 3:54.32.
Other top finishers for Holy Cross included Wood who took second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.91 and Shubrick who placed third behind Wood with a career-best time of 59.54. Junior Mariel Flood (Kinnelon, N.J.) finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 1:06.51 and Manning added two more second place finishes in the hammer throw (career-best 46.51 meters) and javelin throw (34.98 meters). Senior Kelcey Germain (Auburn, Mass.) also took third in the hammer throw with a distance of 46.30 meters. Freshman Morgan Zurlo (Glen Falls, N.Y.) took third in the high jump with a season-best height of 1.55 meters sophomore MaryGrace Brogioli (Wareham, Mass.) also took third in the triple jump with a season-best distance of 11.02 meters
The women's track and field team will return to action on Sunday, April 28, at the Brown Springtime Invitational.
