Women's Track & Field Opens Action At Patriot League Championship
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished atop the preliminary heats in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes as the Holy Cross women's track and field team opened competition at the 2013 Patriot League Championship on Friday, hosted by Lehigh. Okpoebo tied her career-fastest time of 11.92 seconds in the 100 and finished with a time of 24.84 in the 200 to post a pair of first place finishes. The Crusaders are currently in sixth place with 15 points in the team competition. Bucknell is out to the early lead with 44 points after one day of action.
Along with Okpoebo, sophomore Brianna Tabin (South Hadley, Mass.) and senior Melanie Forte (Milford, N.H.) also qualified for tomorrow's 100-meter dash final. Tabin finished in fifth place with a time of 12.50 seconds while Forte took seventh with a time of 12.65 seconds. Sophomores Emilia Sainato (Albany, N.Y.) and Mackenzie Arndt (Merrimack, Mass.) both qualified for the final heat of the 100-meter hurdles with fifth and seventh place finishes, respectively. Sainato finished with a time of 15.56 seconds and Arndt posted a time of 15.81 seconds. Arndt also finished third in the pole vault with at a height of 3.57 meters and fellow classmate Michelle McGahan (Acton, Mass.) took sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.42 meters.
The 4x800-meter relay team comprised of sophomore Abigail Mitchell (Manchester, N.H.), senior Kathleen Brekka (Hubbardston, Mass.), freshman Caroline Carley (Barrington, Ill.) and senior Brittany Groski (Tewksbury, Mass.) took home a third place for six teams points with a season-best time of 8:55.82.
Junior Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) added two team points for the Crusaders with a fifth place finish in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 38:16.42. Junior Christy Manning (Scarborough, Maine) took eighth in the hammer throw with a distance of 47.07 meters and ninth in the javelin with a throw of 37.18 meters, both of which were career and team-season bests. Sophomores Marissa Romano (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) and MaryGrace Brogioli (Wareham, Mass.) finished 10th and 11th in the long jump with distances of 5.08 meters and 5.05 meters, respectively.
Sophomores Sarah Dahlstrom (Southborough, Mass.) and Alexandra Parise (Pine Bush, N.Y.) represented Holy Cross in day one of the heptathlon as Dahlstrom took first in the shot put portion of the event with a distance of 11.36 meters.
The women's track and field team will wrap up the 2013 Patriot League Championship tomorrow, Saturday, May 4, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
