Women's Track & Field Names 2013-2014 Captains
WORCESTER, Mass. – Seniors Mariel Flood (Kinnelon, N.J.), Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.), Christy Manning (Scarborough, Maine), Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.J.) have been selected as the captains of the 2013-2014 Holy Cross women's track and field team, as announced by head coach Egetta Alfonso.
Flood competes in the long sprints, hurdles and jumps for the Crusaders, and had the fastest time on the team in the 400-meter hurdles in 2012-2013 (1:05.20). She also posted career-best times in the 200-meter dash (27.63) and 400-meter dash (1:01.75) last year, as well as a career-long leap of 5.16 meters in the long jump.
Hughes takes part in the distance events for Holy Cross, and had the squad's fastest time in the 3000-meter run (10:09.06) last season. She also owns career-best times of 5:17.29 in the one-mile run and 17:55.05 in the 5,000-meter run. In addition, Hughes is a member of the Crusader women's cross country team, and ran the fastest time on the squad in all six of her races in 2012.
Manning is one of the team's top competitors in the throwing events. Last season, she set new career-bests in all four of her events: the discus (39.60 meters), the hammer (47.07), the weight throw (13.77 meters) and the javelin (38.81 meters). Manning's marks in both the hammer and javelin were the best on the team in 2012-2013.
Okpoebo was the 2012-2013 Patriot League champion in the indoor 60-meter dash, the outdoor 100-meter dash and the outdoor 200-meter dash. She also broke school records in the 55-meter dash (7.15), the 60-meter dash (7.53) and the 200-meter dash (24.19) this year, and was named the Athlete of the Meet at the Patriot League outdoor championship.
van den Heuvel runs in the distance events for the Crusaders, and had the team's fastest times in both the 5,000-meter run (17:42.53) and the 10,000 meter run (38:08.10) last season. She also turned in career-best times in the 1,500-meter run (5:01.00) and one-mile run (5:25.51) last year. In addition, van den Heuvel is a member of the Holy Cross women's cross country team, where she ran the second-fastest time on the squad in four of her six races last season.
