Volleyball Set To Start Season At Home Versus Providence On Sept. 2

- The Holy Cross volleyball team
will start the 2009 regular season when it plays Providence on
Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 7:00 p.m., at the Holy Cross Field House.
Last season, the Friars defeated the Crusaders twice with a 3-0 win
to open the season on Sept. 3 and a 3-0 victory at the Crusader
Classic on Sept. 12. Providence, who already started its season
with three matches at the Niagara Invitational Tournament, is 1-2
overall.
- The Crusaders will then travel to
Fairfield, Conn., to compete at the Sacred Heart Invitational on
Sept. 4-5. On Friday, Holy Cross will meet tournament host Sacred
Heart at 7:00 p.m., while on Saturday the Crusaders will play Iona
at 12:00 p.m. and Missouri-Kansas City at 2:00 p.m. Holy Cross
competed at this tournament a season ago going 0-3 with losses
against Sacred Heart, Rider and Bryant.
- The Crusaders return seven players
including five starters and their libero, while they also welcome
five freshmen to the program. Juniors Angela Chisholm
(Millis, Mass.) and Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh,
Pa.) will serve as team co-captains this season. Last
year, as the team's libero, Chisholm led the Crusaders with a
career-best 241 digs and a career-best 3.21 digs per set. She also
ranked fifth in the Patriot League for digs per set and had 15
matches with double-digit digs. O'Donnell, who enters the season
ranked fifth all-time at Holy Cross with 1,485 career assists, had
eight double-doubles last year and 594 assists.
- Holy Cross will also be led by senior Samantha Surface (Fresno, Calif.) who led the team with a career-best 209 kills last year and ranked fourth on the team with a career-best 161 digs. She enters the season with 485 kills, 298 digs and 63 blocks for her career.
