Holy Cross Volleyball Drops Conference Tilt To Army, 3-0
WORCESTER, Mass. -
Ariana Mankus recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs to
lead Army as the Holy Cross volleyball team lost to the Black
Knights, 3-0, Saturday at the Holy Cross Field House by scores of
25-8, 25-14 and 25-17. With the loss, the Crusaders drop to 2-17
overall (0-5 Patriot League), while Army improves to 17-3 (5-0
Patriot League).
Junior setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
led Holy Cross with 16 assists and four digs. Freshman
Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) tallied seven kills
and six digs for the Crusaders, while senior Samantha
Surface (Fresno, Calif.) added seven digs and three
kills.
In addition to Mankus, Army was led by Francine Vasquez, who
tallied nine kills and five digs. Maureen Bannon recorded 38 of the
team's 42 assists, while also netting four kills and five digs.
Army jumped out to a 5-1 lead en route to its 25-8 win in the first
set. The Black Knights also started quickly in the second set,
opening up a 4-0 lead. Holy Cross cut the deficit to 5-4, but Army
scored 20 of the next 30 points to take the set, 25-14. Bannon had
15 assists for the Black Knights in the second frame.
The Crusaders took their first leads of the match in the third set,
holding advantages of 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3. Army rallied to win
seven of the next nine points to open a 10-6 advantage. Holy Cross
responded to cut the lead to 14-12, but the Black Knights hung on
to the lead and eventually scored the final five points of the
frame to win the set, 25-17. Bannon netted 14 assists for Army in
the set, while O'Donnell led Holy Cross with seven assists and
sophomore Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) added
three kills and one dig.
The Crusaders return to action Tuesday, Oct. 13 when they travel to
Hamden, Conn. to take on Quinnipiac in non-conference action. The
match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
