WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Quinnipiac in straight sets Friday afternoon at the Beanpot Classic at the Holy Cross Field House by scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-20. With the win, the Crusaders start the season 2-0 overall for the first time since 2001, while the Bobcats kick off the season 0-1 overall. The tournament continues for the Crusaders at 7:00 p.m. when they face Northeastern.
Senior setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the Crusaders with 29 assists. Junior hitter Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) registered six kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Sophomore Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 digs.
Sophomore Taylor Payne paced the Bobcats in hitting percentage with .500 and 10 kills. Graduate student Amanda Armstrong pitched in with 11 kills, while junior setter Kayla Lawler led the team with 28 assists. Freshman Tracey Wright and junior Kelby Carey registered 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
The Crusaders and Bobcats traded leads until Holy Cross pulled ahead for good at 15-14 in the first set. In the second set there were four lead changes before the Crusaders took the 12-11 advantage for good. Later in the set, the Bobcats made a comeback with six straight serves only to be answered by the Crusaders who scored the last six points to take the set. With the Crusaders sitting on 24 points in the third set, the Bobcats did not go away without a fight, scoring on three serves to make it 24-20 before Holy Cross claimed the victory.
