ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Junior Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) led the Crusaders with 11 kills as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Navy, 3-0, by scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-19 in Patriot League action at the Wesley A. Brown Field House on Saturday. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 8-21 overall (4-8 Patriot League), while the Mids fall to 6-21 overall (1-11 Patriot League).
Junior Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) led the team with 13 digs, while freshman Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) notched 33 assists. Freshman Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) also had a strong performance with 10 kills. Senior Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) tallied seven kills. Junior Liz Ashton (Milford, Mass.) recorded a .500 hitting percentage with six kills on 10 attempts with only one error.
Navy was led by Christy Rapp who posted 14 kills and Shelby Mass who tallied 31 assists.
With Holy Cross leading 24-23 in the first set, Lynch recorded a kill to give the Crusaders a 25-23 first-set win. Lynch led the Crusaders with five kills in the set. After a kill by Stokes to give the Crusaders a 24-23 lead in the second set, Erin Fortner posted a kill for the Mids to tie the set at 24-24. Swearingen then tallied two straight kills to give Holy Cross a 26-24 victory and a two-set lead. Lynch led the way with six kills. The Crusaders recorded a .317 hitting percentage in the set. With the Crusaders leading 18-16 in the third set, they then took seven of the last 10 points including a kill by Colpoys on match point for a 25-19 victory.
The Crusaders return to action when they meet Bucknell on Friday, Nov. 11 at the Holy Cross Field House at 7:00 p.m. The Crusaders will then conclude the 2011 season versus Colgate on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 3:00 p.m. in Worcester on Senior Day.
