WORCESTER, Mass. – Natalie Kridel posted a double-double for the Pioneers with 10 kills and 17 digs as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Sacred Heart, 3-0, in the third match of the Beanpot Classic at the Holy Cross Field House on Friday by scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-15. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-2 overall, while the Pioneers kick off the season 1-0 overall. Holy Cross lost to Alabama by a 3-0 score in the first match of the tournament, while the Crimson Tide then fell to Northeastern in the second match in five sets. The tournament moves to Northeastern's Solomon Court on Saturday, Aug. 25. The Crusaders will play Northeastern at 11:00 a.m.
Senior Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) led the Crusaders with eight kills and now has 1,237 career kills. She is 10 kills away from setting a new school record. Sophomore Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) posted seven kills, while sophomore setter Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) tallied 18 assists and seven digs. Senior Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) tied for the team lead with seven digs. Senior Callie Black (Fallon, Nev.) led the Crusaders with four blocks.
Alissa Young led the Pioneers with 16 kills, while Alisa Mesa posted 41 assists. Dianis Mercado tallied 15 digs.
The Pioneers took the first set by a 25-17 score as Young posted seven kills. With the Crusaders down by just one point at 21-20, the Pioneers won four of the last six points to earn a 25-22 second-set victory. Young once again posted seven kills, while Lynch led the Crusaders with four. The Pioneers clinched the three-set win with a 25-15 third-set victory.
