Crusaders To Play At Central Connecticut Invitational

  • The Holy Cross volleyball team will return to action when it competes at the Central Connecticut Invitational in New Britain, Conn., on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The Crusaders take on Brown on Friday at 7:00 p.m., while on Saturday, Holy Cross meets Central Connecticut at 1:00 p.m. and St. John's at 3:30 p.m. This is the first time that Holy Cross has competed in a tournament at Central Connecticut since the 2000 season.
  • Brown will open its season with the match versus the Crusaders. The Bears have won 18 consecutive matches over Holy Cross. The Crusaders last win in the series was on Oct. 20, 1987, by a 3-1 score. Last year, Brown went 6-19 overall and 2-12 in the Ivy League. CCSU, who plays Hartford on Aug. 29, is 1-2 with losses to Loyola (Md.) and West Virginia, and a win versus St. Francis (Pa.). The Crusaders are 2-1 versus CCSU in the last three matches with a 1-1 record last year. Central Connecticut went 20-11 and 11-5 in the NEC last year. St. John's, who plays Siena on Aug. 29, is 3-1 overall with wins versus Morgan State, Coppin State and UMBC, and a loss versus Towson. The Red Storm defeated the Crusaders by a 3-0 score on Sept. 3, 2005, in the last meeting between the teams. Last season, the Red Storm went 10-21 overall and 1-13 in the Big East. 
  • Senior Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) has 1,242 career kills. She is five kills away from setting a new school record. The record is 1,246 by Christine Strawson (2004-2007).
  • Lynch leads the team so far this season with 24 kills. Senior Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) and Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) lead the team with 23 digs. Stokes and senior Callie Black (Fallon, Nev.) are tied for the team lead with 10 blocks.
