NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Senior Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) led the Crusaders with seven kills, but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Central Connecticut, 3-0, at the Central Connecticut Invitational at Detrick Gym on Saturday by scores of 26-24, 25-14 and 25-18. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-5 overall, while CCSU improves to 3-3 overall. The Crusaders will return to action in the tournament on Saturday afternoon when they meet St. John's at 3:30 p.m.
Sophomore Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) and freshman Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) each posted five kills, while sophomore Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) led the team with 19 assists and eight digs.
CCSU was led by Emily Cochran who tallied 17 kills, while Blaike King posted a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Makenna Lommori totaled 20 assists and Brittany Schumacher tallied 19 digs.
With the Crusaders leading by a 19-13 score in the first set, CCSU won nine of the next 12 points to tie the set at 22-22. Holy Cross then won the next two points to earn two set points at 24-22. But CCSU rallied to win four straight points for the 26-24 opening set victory. Lynch and Cochran each posted five kills for the set. Central Connecticut tallied a .464 hitting percentage in the second set and Cochran totaled five kills as CCSU won the set by a 25-14 score. Cochran posted seven kills in the third set as CCSU won seven of the last 10 points to earn the match win with a 25-18 victory.
