WORCESTER, Mass. – Erin Fortner led the Midshipmen with 12 kills as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Navy, 3-0, in Patriot League action at the Holy Cross Field House on Saturday afternoon by scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-21. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-23 overall (1-8 PL), while the Mids improve to 9-12 overall (5-4 PL).
Freshman Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) led the Crusaders with 10 kills, while senior captain Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) posted nine kills and a team-best 13 digs. Sophomore Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) tallied 21 assists and nine digs, while sophomore Julia Gould (Ridgewood, N.J.) had 10 digs.
Olivia Yeager also tallied double-digit kills for the Mids with 10. Alex Karika posted 34 assists and Christy Rapp secured 19 digs. Katie Sylakowski led the team with four blocks.
With the Crusaders trailing 22-18 in the first set, a kill by sophomore Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) and then two kills by Oliver cut the Navy lead to 22-21. The Mids then won three of last four points to earn the 25-22 win including a kill on set point by Fortner as she led the team with four kills. Oliver tallied five kills and an outstanding .833 hitting percentage for the set. With the second set tied at 19-19, Navy won six straight points for the 25-19 victory. Fortner again led the team with four kills. Yeager led Navy in the third set with five kills as the Mids won the match-clinching set by a 25-21 score.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 24, when they play Bryant at the Holy Cross Field House at 7:00 p.m. It will be "Professor Appreciation Night." The match can be viewed on Crusader Vision.
