Volleyball Drops Match To Stony Brook, 3-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – Kaitlin Costello tallied 13 kills and Shelby Tietjen posted 12 kills for the Seawolves as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Stony Brook, 3-0, on the second day of the Crusader Classic at the Holy Cross Field House on Saturday, by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-19. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-2 overall, while the Seawolves improve to 2-0 overall. The Crusaders conclude action in the Crusader Classic on Saturday, Aug. 31, with a 7:00 p.m. contest against Manhattan.

Junior Julia Gould (Ridgewood, N.J.) led the Crusaders with 10 digs, while freshman Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tallied a team-best six kills. freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted 12 assists.

Hannah Dolan recorded 32 assists for the Seawolves, while Laura Hathaway posted 10 digs.  

With Stony Brook leading the first set, 24-20, Melissa Rigo posted a kill on set-point to give the Seawolves a 25-20 opening game win. With the Crusaders trailing by a 23-14 score in the second set, they posted four straight points to cut the Stony Brook advantage to 23-18. But the Seawolves would take two of the next three points as Rigo concluded the set with a kill for the 25-19 victory. With the third set tied at 18-18, Stony Brook won seven of the last eight points for a 25-19 match-clinching win. Tietjen tallied a kill on match point.
