Volleyball Earns 3-1 Victory Versus Manhattan
WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshmen Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) and Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) each tallied their first collegiate double-doubles as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Manhattan, 3-1, in the final match of the Crusader Classic at the Holy Cross Field House on Saturday, by scores of 24-26, 25-13, 25-21 and 25-21. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 1-2 overall, while the Jaspers fall to 2-1 overall. McKernan was named to the Crusader Classic All-Tournament team as she posted 63 assists, 18 kills, a .432 hitting percentage and 18 digs over the three matches.
McKernan posted the double-double with 14 kills and 38 assists as she also tallied eight digs just missing a triple-double, while Sifferlen recorded 16 kills and 10 digs. McKernan also led the team with a .636 hitting percentage. Freshmen Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) also had outstanding performances as Welsch tallied 16 kills with a .522 hitting percentage and Popp secured a team-best 23 digs. Junior captains Mary-Kate Short (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) and Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) each tallied seven kills, while junior Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) had nine digs. As a team the Crusaders were strong with a .336 hitting percentage.
The Jaspers were led by Sydney Volovski who had 15 kills and Jade Gray who posted a double-double with 13 assists and 11 digs.
With the first set tied at 24-24, the Jaspers won the next two points to earn the 26-24 first-set win as Anna Kitlar posted a kill on set point. The Crusaders controlled the second set by moving out to a 15-4 lead. Holy Cross would go onto take the set by a 25-13 score. McKernan tallied six kills on six attempts and also had nine assists. With Holy Cross leading the third set, 23-21, the Crusaders won the next two points with a kill by Welsch and block assists by junior Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) and Sifferlen on set point. This time it was Welsch posting six kills on six attempts. With the Crusaders leading 24-21 in the fourth set, Short clinched the Crusaders' first win of the season with a kill on match point. Sifferlen led the team in the set with six kills.
The Crusaders return to action on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m., against Harvard at the Harvard Invitational in Cambridge, Mass. They will also take on Hofstra on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1:00 p.m.
