CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted her second double-double of the season with 33 assists and 10 digs but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Harvard, 3-2, at the Harvard Invitational at the Malkin Athletic Center on Friday night, by scores of 18-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21 and 15-9. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-3 overall, while the Crimson start the season 1-0 overall. The Crusaders will conclude play at the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 7, versus Hofstra at 1:00 p.m.
McKernan also tallied nine kills just missing a triple-double. Freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) was also outstanding as her 31 digs are the most by a Crusader in a match since Angela Chisholm tallied 33 digs versus Hartford on Sept. 7, 2010. Freshman Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the team with 12 kills, while freshman Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) recorded nine kills. Senior Alex Aycock (Jonesboro, Ark.) posted eight kills, while junior Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) tallied a career-best five blocks. Junior Julia Gould (Ridgewood, N.J.) recorded a career-best 17 digs.
Corinne Bain posted a double-double for the Crimson with 10 kills and 31 assists, while she also just missed a triple-double with nine digs. Caroline Walters led the team with 11 kills, while Natalie Doyle posted 26 digs.
After the Crusaders won the first set by a 25-18 score, the Crimson then took the second set, 25-17. With Holy Cross trailing 21-18 in the third set, the Crusaders won three straight points to tie the set at 21-21. After two consecutive points by Harvard, the Crusaders won the next four points to earn a 25-23 victory. Harvard forced a fifth and deciding set by taking the fourth set, 25-21. The Crismson then clinched a win in their season-opener by posting a 15-9 win in the fifth set.
