Volleyball Sweeps Hofstra, 3-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) tallied her third double-double of the season with 28 assists and 13 digs as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Hofstra, 3-0, at the Harvard Invitational at the Malkin Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 27-25. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 2-3 overall, while the Pride fall to 4-1 overall. The Crusaders conclude the tournament with a 1-1 record as they fell to Harvard, 3-2, on Friday. Freshmen Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) were each named to the All-Tournament team. Welsch posted 27 kills over the two matches and Popp tallied 53 digs.

Welsch led the Crusaders with 15 kills and recorded a .500 hitting percentage. She also ranked first on the team with a season-best six blocks. Senior Alex Aycock (Jonesboro, Ark.) and freshman Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) each totaled seven kills, while Popp secured a team-best 22 digs. This is the third straight match that Popp had tallied 22 digs or more. Junior Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) tallied five blocks and junior Julia Gould (Ridgewood, N.J.) had 11 digs.

Kaitlyn Krause and Kelsie Wills each recorded double-doubles for Hofstra. Krause tallied 19 assists and 11 digs, while Wills totaled 12 kills and 13 digs.

The Crusaders moved out to a 12-3 lead to start off the first set. Then with Holy Cross leading 21-18, the Crusaders won the next four points for a 25-18 opening set victory as this was the first set that Hofstra had lost so far this season. Welsch led the team with five kills for the set. With the Pride leading the second set by a 22-20 score, the Crusaders then took five of the next six points to secure the 25-23 win. With the third set tied at 25-25, Shizuru and Welsch recorded block assists to give the Crusaders a match point. Then Shizuru and Welsch once again tallied block assists as the Crusaders took the third set 27-25 to earn the match win. Welsch posted six kills to lead the team in the third set.

The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 10, when they play at Hartford at 7:00 p.m.
