WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Alex Aycock (Jonesboro, Ark.) tallied 11 kills as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Lafayette, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action at the Holy Cross Field House by scores of 25-7, 25-22 and 25-16. With the win, the Crusaders advance to 7-12 overall (2-5 PL), while the Leopards fall to 9-9 overall (1-6 PL). The Crusaders held a "Pink For A Purpose" event at the match as they are raising money for PINK Revolution. Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) led the team with 25 assists, and classmate Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) led the team defensively with 11 digs. Freshman Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tallied seven kills with a .778 hitting percentage in the match. The team hit .409 collectively during the first set.
The Leopards were led by Samantha Volk with 23 assists, and Lauren Pisaro with 14 digs.
The Crusaders took an early 11-7 lead in the first set when Aycock killed the ball to bring the serve back to Holy Cross. With the score at 12-7, junior Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) served the ball and Aycock tallied another kill. Eleven serves, including three aces later, Shizuru served set point, and Aycock ended the first set with a kill. In the second set, the Leopards came back from losing 20-16 to tie the score at 21-21. The Crusaders won the next three points, and eventually the set 25-22. In the third set, Holy Cross came out strong leading Lafayette 8-1 and never lost the lead during the set. With the score at 24-16, Popp served match point and tallied an ace to win the game.
