ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Erin Fortner led the Mids with 11 kills as Navy defeated the Holy Cross volleyball team 3-0, in the Crusaders' season-finale on Saturday in Patriot League action by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-23. With the loss, the Crusaders conclude the season 7-21 overall (2-14 PL), while the Midshipmen end their season 13-16 overall (9-7 PL).
Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) led the Crusaders with 22 assists and six service aces. Classmate freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) led the Crusader defense with 10 digs. Popp concluded the season with 4.56 digs per set this year, which are ranked second all-time for a season in program history, finishing barely behind Katie Lynch's 4.57 digs per set in 1999. Her 429 digs are third all-time behind Lynch's 430 in 1999 and Angela Chisholm's 442 in 2010. McKernan's 0.48 aces per set rank her ninth all-time. Fortner's 11 kills and Alex Karica's 27 assists led the Mids.
In the first set, the Crusaders tied the score 11-11 on a service ace by McKernan. The Mids came back to win seven straight points to make the score 18-11. The Crusaders cut the lead to three points, 23-20, but were unable to win the set as Navy won the last two points to take the set 25-20. In the second set, with the score tied 9-9, the Mids won five in a row to make the score 14-9. With the score 17-14, Navy scored eight of the last 13 points to take the set 25-19. With the third set tied 22-22, Navy won three of the last four points to secure a 25-23 match clinching third set victory.
