PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Junior Christine Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 kills and 15 digs but it was not enough as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Providence, 3-2, by scores of 19-30, 30-22, 30-21, 24-30 and 15-12, in non-conference action, on Wednesday evening at Mullaney Gymnasium. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-7 overall, while the Friars improve to 3-5 overall.
Freshman Samantha Surface (Fresno, Calif.) had her most productive match as a Crusader so far as she tallied 12 kills and chipped in with eight digs, while junior Meagan Merinder (Andover, Mass.) had a solid match with 10 kills, five digs and five total blocks.
Senior setter Chrissy Fanning (East Amherst, N.Y.) posted 40 assists, six kills and nine digs on the evening, while senior libero Valerie Mora (San Antonio, Texas) had a strong defensive match with 13 digs.
The Friars were led by Jeanette Toney's 22 kills and Sara Sheehan's 48 assists. Kelly Krahenbuhl had 26 digs to lead Providence.
The Crusaders return to action this weekend when they participate in the Villanova Classic. On Friday, September 15, Holy Cross will face tournament host Villanova at 7:30 p.m., while on Saturday, September 16, the Crusaders will take on Maryland-Baltimore County at 12:30 p.m. and Sacred Heart at 4:00 p.m.
