WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior co-captain Samantha Surface (Fresno, Calif.) earned her second double-double of the season and the fourth of her career with 12 kills and 14 digs, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Bryant, 3-1, by scores of 18-25, 25-12, 25-23 and 25-18, in the last match of the Crusader Classic at the Holy Cross Field House on Saturday night. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-8, while the Bulldogs improve to 8-2.
Holy Cross' Liz Auger, Bryant's Miranda Kolb, Wagner's Laura Bellotti and Providence's Elizabeth Flynn were named to the all-tournament team. Auger had 49 kills in the three matches including a career-best 26 kills and an impressive .426 hitting percentage in the 3-2 win over Wagner. In the match with Bryant, she had 18 kills.
Along with Surface and Auger, freshman Mallaigh McGinley (Amity Harbor, N.Y.) also had a strong offensive match against Bryant with nine kills. Sophomore setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 42 assists, while sophomore libero Angela Chisholm (Millis, Mass.) led the team with 16 digs. Chisholm has recorded double-digit digs in seven straight matches.
The Bulldogs were led by Jazmin Stoner offensively who had 15 kills, while Kolb was outstanding with a double-double of 43 assists and 13 digs. Maria Scocca had 12 kills and Hilary Andrews had 10 kills.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Kingston, R.I., for a match against Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m.
