Worcester, Mass. - Sophomore Christine Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) tallied her third double-double of the season with 22 kills and 11 digs as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Providence, 3-1, on Wednesday evening at the Hart Center. The Crusaders won by scores of 30-20, 31-33, 30-24, 30-27. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 2-6 on the season, while the Friars fall to 0-9.
Strawson was also strong at the net with three solo blocks and two block assists as the Crusaders had a season best eight total team blocks. Junior Chrissy Fanning (East Amherst, N.Y.) had a career high 42 assists, while she also registered nine digs. Junior Valerie Mora (San Antonio, Texas) tallied a season best 13 kills and just missed a double-double as she recorded nine digs.
Freshman Molly Anderson (Weston, Conn.) led the team in digs with a career high 19 to add to her team leading 84 digs on the season.
The Friars were led by Allison Baker's 15 kills and Annie Fiorvanti's 31 assists and 19 digs. Libero Amanda Little played solid defense with 33 digs.
The Crusaders return to action when they travel to New Haven, Conn., to participate in the Yale Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 16-17. On Friday, Holy Cross will take on St. Francis (N.Y.) at 5:00 p.m., while on Saturday the Crusaders will face Quinnipiac at noon, and tournament host Yale at 7:00 p.m.
