Bethlehem, Pa.- Junior setter Chrissy Fanning (East Amherst, N.Y.) and sophomore Christine Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) each recorded double-doubles as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Lehigh, 3-1, by scores of 30-28, 19-30, 30-25 and 30-25, to earn its first Patriot League win of the season, on Saturday afternoon at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall in Bethlehem, Pa. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 5-9 overall (1-1 PL), while the Mountain Hawks fall to 3-9 overall (0-2 PL).
Fanning tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 30 assists and a season-high 14 digs, while Strawson registered her eighth double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Junior Valerie Mora (San Antonio, Texas) had a solid match as she had seven kills and 14 digs. Senior Caitlin O'Callaghan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished second on the team in kills with eight and had a season-high three block solos, while sophomore libero Katie Fitzpatrick (Queensbury, N.Y.) recorded a season-high 13 digs as Holy Cross had four players reach double digits in digs.
The Mountain Hawks were led by Michelle Schwendenmann's 21 kills and 24 digs, while setter Kathleen Lafferty dished out 54 assists.
In the first game, Holy Cross came back from a 10-3 deficit to win by two points and then the Mountain Hawks rebounded in game two for a 30-19 win. The Crusaders came out strong in both games three and four as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game three and a 5-0 lead in game four. Lehigh had late rallies in both games but the Crusaders were able to hold on and clinch the victory.
The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to face Patriot League foe Colgate on Friday, September 30, at 7:00 p.m.
