Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Navy, 3-2, by scores of 27-30, 23-30, 30-15, 30-11 and 15-10 in Patriot League action, on Saturday evening at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 5-13 overall (1-5 PL), while the Mids improve to 13-5 overall (5-2 PL).
Sophomore Christine Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) led the Crusaders with her tenth double-double of the season with 23 kills and 15 digs, as she had a .308 hitting percentage. Junior setter Chrissy Fanning (East Amherst, N.Y.) led all players with 43 assists as she also added eight digs. Freshman Molly Anderson (Weston, Conn.) and junior Valerie Mora (San Antonio, Texas) each had double digit digs with 15 and 11 respectively. Senior captain Caitlin O'Callaghan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ranked second on the team in kills with eight.
Navy was led by Ashley Musser's triple-double as she had 24 kills, 30 assists and 11 digs, while Kim Koss chipped in with 29 assists. Beth McArthur was second in kills with 15 and Megan Vehovic led Navy in Digs with 28.
The Crusaders came out strong as they won the first two games, 30-27 and 30-23, but Navy bounced back as they took the next two by scores of 30-15 and 30-11. The match came down to the fifth game as Holy Cross took an 8-6 lead. But the Mids tied it at 8-8 and then won nine of the last 11 points for the 15-10 win.
The Crusaders return to the court when they travel to West Point, N.Y., to take on Army in Patriot League action on Saturday, October 15, at 2:00 p.m.
